One-week countdown!

Oh, I love birthdays! Linnea's birthday is just one week away and I am getting really excited. Birthdays were a big deal in my house growing up, and I love getting to plan special surprises for my little girl. Tim and I love hosting gatherings, too ( I can think up many reasons for a party), and although it's more stressful with little ones, we still enjoy it.

So here's a birthday countdown of some fun Linnea trivia leading up to the big 3:

7. She is now potty trained and hardly ever has an accident. Still in diapers at night, but that's no biggie. The only thing she really needs me for is untwisting her undies to get them back on when she's done. ;)

6. Linnea loves the idea of doing school and I'm excited for our loose homeschooling plans this fall. Some areas we'll cover, in a fun and relaxed way, are more emphasis on the alphabet, days of the week and months of the year, fire safety, scripture memory and lots of reading together!

5. Linnea's favorite  music to listen to is "church music." That's basically any music from our church bands you can find online. She asks for Chris Tomlin by name. And she raises her hands and sings along, just like she sees us doing at church. Makes my heart melt.

4. She calls Peter "chicken," as in, "Hey chicken! How you doing, chicken?" Don't know where she got this from but it is hilarious.

3. One of her funny phrases lately is "watch on," as in watching over someone: "It's okay Mommy, I'll watch on Petey while you run downstairs."

2. Naps are now a thing of the past. She was napping only about half the time anyway and it was almost always a struggle. Now, without napping, she usually falls asleep in under 20 minutes at bedtime. Often in about 5. This is big news for the Psiaki household, folks!

1. She has started letting me give her braided pigtails. Love love love!

Fall preview

In the lifestyle magazine world, of which I used to be a very small part, there is often an emphasis on seasonal activities and local events to look forward to. Seattle Magazine had (probably still has) a Fall Preview of the arts in the city: concerts, plays, readings, and operas among other shows to anticipate and get on your calendar.

Well, consider this volume one of the Psiaki Fall Preview. For a year now I have been excited to get Linnea into ballet lessons, just because I think it would be fun for her to try and absolutely darling to watch. There is a little dance studio up the street that offers all kinds of dance, and their ballet classes start at age three. I am so excited to try this with Linnea come fall and see if she likes it! (We probably have a couple more years until I can take her to The Nutcracker... The sets are by Maurice Sendak and are honestly a bit frightening.)

Our neighbor gave Linnea this little leotard with tutu and I was so pleased it fit. She has another ballet outfit you've seen before.

It remains to be seen whether they will get much use outside dress-up time at home, but I'm hoping for it! :)

What we do when it's HOT outside - for Grandpa Mark

Go downtown and play in the fountain and the lake...

...then visit the mall for some indoor play with A/C (Peter LOVED crawling and climbing there...he is on a fish) and act like mall rats for the afternoon.

A trio was playing outside Nordstrom - piano, upright bass & percussion - and we wandered up to listen. They drew quite a crowd over the 15 or so minutes we enjoyed the music. They played classics like The Girl from Ipanema, The Way You Look Tonight, and some Disney songs for the kids, as there were many. I couldn't get over how much the upright bass player looked like Grandpa Mark, except for only a moustache and no beard, and with curly hair. The resemblance was quite striking. And though very friendly seeming, he wasn't singing along -- that was a dead giveaway. :) In my tiny photo he is the one behind the man in purple.

You would have liked it, Grandpa!

It runs in the family

Camping out, co-sleeper edition

We are in the midst of a heat wave! Peter's A/C unit wasn't working (we figured out this morning that the water just needed to be emptied), so along about half past midnight he and I succumbed to the heat and joined Tim and Linnea in her room for a little sleepover. The air mattress was already blown up with sheets on it because Petey and I've been sleeping on it in his room frequently. The lumpiness isn't great, but it's better than sticking to the other person's skin!

The car cart at Fred Meyer

Highly sought after and much enjoyed. (It was Peter's first time!)

From my sweetie

For my 28th birthday, Linnea got me...

A bottle of bubbles (about half of which she already spilled at the park this afternoon, haha)

A mixed bag of Jelly Bellies (which flavors she apparently picked out herself at Fred Meyer)

A handmade card (the note inside is priceless, and she also drew me a cupcake)

And a multi -colored flowered rain hat.

I so love that girl. She has a mind of her own. :)

For Mary

Here, finally, are the awesome wall organizers I got with my birthday money from last year (it takes me a while to get going with things like this). We've had them up on the wall for a couple months now, and they are helping tremendously with taming the amount of papers that inevitably pile up in the kitchen... Coupons, stuff to be filed & dealt with, etc. Also we now have a more official place for keys than the bowl of our chip & dip set which sat on the windowsill for the last two years. :)

So thanks, Mary and Mark etc; I love them! It may be 364 days late but still wanted to let you know what I chose and that they are much appreciated.
